Assessment Regulations for Engineering Programmes

What Do I Need to Achieve to Pass the Year/Graduate?

Information for Undergraduate Students (Years 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4)

Level of Study	What You Need to Achieve	Important Information
Year 0 (Foundation Level Students)	In order to pass this level you must: Pass all CORE modules (listed in your Course Handbook). Achieve 100 credits at pass level (40%) or above. Achieve a minimum of 30% in any failed non-core modules. Achieve an overall level average of at least 35%.	Please note you may be awarded 60 credits of re-sits in failed modules, where a re-sit is available. If you have failures in more than 60 credits you may be offered a Repeat Level of Study. 10-20 credits can be compensated if you have a module mark between 30-39% in a non-core module, and all other progression criteria is met. If you fail 1 CORE module (with 30+) you would only be required to re-sit the CORE module, not both. For queries on Qualified Fails (QF), please refer to our Results FAQs.
Year 1, 2 and 3 (Progressing Students)	In order to pass this level, you must: Achieve 120 passed credits. In Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 all modules are CORE for all accredited Engineering programmes and therefore, you must pass all modules. Achieve an overall level average of at least 35%.	For Non-Finalist students: Please note you may be awarded 60 credits of re-sits in failed modules, where an assessment is available. If you had failures in more than 60 credits you may be offered a Repeat Level of Study. For Year 2 and 3 students all supplementary assessment marks will be capped (at 40%) unless appropriate Extenuating Circumstances apply. For Year 3 students on a 4-year MEng course: If you have passed 100 credits you will be allowed to take 20 credits of re-sits and remain on the MEng course. If you have not passed 100 credits you will be transferred onto the BEng programme and follow the finalist rules below.
Year 3 (Finalist Students)	In order to pass the level of study, you must: Achieve 120 passed credits. In Years 1, 2, 3, and 4 all modules are CORE for all accredited Engineering programmes and therefore, you must pass all modules. Achieve an overall level average of at least 35%.	For BEng and MEng Finalist students: If you have not met the minimum requirements to graduate with an accredited degree, you may be offered the opportunity to re-sit a maximum of 40 credits of failed modules, where re-sits are possible. All re-sits will take place during the August Supplementary period. All supplementary assessment marks will be capped unless appropriate Extenuating Circumstances apply. Please note if you are a BSc Software Engineering student you are subject to the Science Assessment Regulations.
Year 4 (MEng Students)	You must achieve the below to obtain your MEng accredited degree: All modules are CORE and must be passed. Achieve 100 credits at pass level (50%) or above. Achieve a minimum of 40% in any failed non-core modules. Achieve an overall level average of at least 35%.	For accredited Engineering programmes all modules are CORE. Therefore, although the minimum pass criteria for the year stipulates that 100 credits must be passed, students on an accredited degree must pass all 120 credits of the modules they are enrolled on. The MSc Virtual Reality programme is not accredited and is therefore excluded from this. Finalist students who have not met the requirements to graduate with an accredited degree, may be offered the opportunity to complete a re-sit in a maximum of 40 credits of failed modules, where re-sits are possible. All re-sits will occur during the August Supplementary period. All supplementary assessment marks will be capped unless appropriate Extenuating Circumstances apply.

Further Guidance for Year 3 students enrolled on a non-accredited BSc programme

Please be aware that the non-accredited BSc programme will follow standard University regulations, and it is important to be aware of the following:

CORE modules
There are no CORE modules in the Year 3 BSc programmes.

B-version of modules
Where a module has an additional assessment rule (for example, students must pass the exam with a mark of 40%+ in order to pass the module), B-versions of these modules have been created for the BSc programmes. The module content and assessment are the same, but the additional assessment rule does not feature.

Compensation at Final Year
As standard final year regulations apply for the BSc, these currently permit compensation in up to 40- credits down to 0 in non-core modules at Final Year.

Resits at Final Year
There is no opportunity for resits in final year for those on the BSc programme, unlike BEng/MEng, but approved deferrals will still be possible as normal.

Calculation of the BSc degree classification
Calculation of the BSc will follow standard university regulations with the following system applied - The overall average will be worked out with 3*weighting for the best 80Cr from Year 3, 2* weighting for remaining 40Cr from Year 3 and best 40Cr from Year 2, 1*weighting for remaining Year 2 modules. A formula is then applied to calculate the degree classification average.

As previously highlighted the BSc programmes are not accredited.

Information for Postgraduate Students

Taught MSc Programmes	What You Need to Achieve	Important Information
September Start Programmes	These programmes are divided into two parts: For Part One you need to pass 120 credits of modules (with a mark of 50% or more). You will be allowed one opportunity to redeem any failed modules in the August 2025 Supplementary period. Please be aware that some modules may be non-redeemable, which means there is not a re-sit mechanism for the module. If a module is non-redeemable this will be specified in your course handbook. When you have passed Part One, you can proceed to Part Two, which consists of a 60 credit project/dissertation and an oral viva.	Students enrolled on September Entry Taught MSc programmes are assessed according to the non-flexible regulations. Any supplementary attempts will be capped at 50%, unless Extenuating Circumstances have been approved.
September Start Programmes with a Year in Industry	These programmes are completed across two years. In Year 1, 120 credits of taught modules are completed from September-June. In Year 2, you will need to complete Part A (a 60 credit project/dissertation and an oral viva) and Part B (an Industrial Experience Module completed across the year). You need to achieve 120 credits of passed modules (with a mark of 50% or more) in Year 1 to be able to proceed to Year 2. You will be allowed an opportunity to redeem any failed modules in the August Supplementary period in Year 1. Please be aware that some modules may be non-redeemable, which means there is not a re-sit mechanism for the module. If a module is non-redeemable this will be specified in your course handbook.	Any supplementary attempts will be capped at 50%, unless Extenuating Circumstances have been approved. If you fail to pass Year 1, following the August Supplementary period then you will be transferred to the non-placement cohort of the relevant MSc programme.
January Start Programmes	You will need to complete and pass (with 50% or more): 60 credits of taught modules in the Spring Semester (January-June 2025). Your 60 credit dissertation and oral viva in the Summer Semester (June-September). An additional 60 credits of taught modules in the Autumn Semester (September - January). You will be allowed an opportunity to redeem any failed modules during the August Supplementary period (for January-June modules) and March Supplementary period (for September-January modules). Please be aware that some modules may be non-redeemable, which means there is not a re-sit mechanism for the module. If a module is non-redeemable this will be specified in your course handbook.	Students enrolled on January Entry Taught MSc programmes are assessed according to the flexible regulations. This means that you can work on your dissertation alongside your taught modules. Any supplementary attempts will be capped at 50%, unless Extenuating Circumstances have been approved.

September Start Programmes

September Start Programmes with a Year in Industry

These programmes are completed across two years.

In Year 1, 120 credits of taught modules are completed from September-June.

In Year 2, you will need to complete Part A (a 60 credit project/dissertation and an oral viva) and Part B (an Industrial Experience Module completed across the year).

You need to achieve 120 credits of passed modules (with a mark of 50% or more) in Year 1 to be able to proceed to Year 2.

You will be allowed an opportunity to redeem any failed modules in the August Supplementary period in Year 1.

Please be aware that some modules may be non-redeemable, which means there is not a re-sit mechanism for the module. If a module is non-redeemable this will be specified in your course handbook.

Any supplementary attempts will be capped at 50%, unless Extenuating Circumstances have been approved.

If you fail to pass Year 1, following the August Supplementary period then you will be transferred to the non-placement cohort of the relevant MSc programme.

January Start Programmes

You will need to complete and pass (with 50% or more):

60 credits of taught modules in the Spring Semester (January-June 2025).
Your 60 credit dissertation and oral viva in the Summer Semester (June-September).
An additional 60 credits of taught modules in the Autumn Semester (September - January).

You will be allowed an opportunity to redeem any failed modules during the August Supplementary period (for January-June modules) and March Supplementary period (for September-January modules).

Please be aware that some modules may be non-redeemable, which means there is not a re-sit mechanism for the module. If a module is non-redeemable this will be specified in your course handbook.

Students enrolled on January Entry Taught MSc programmes are assessed according to the flexible regulations. This means that you can work on your dissertation alongside your taught modules.

Any supplementary attempts will be capped at 50%, unless Extenuating Circumstances have been approved.

Please Note - the above guidance does not apply to the following programmes:

MSc Sustaimable Engineering Management for International Development
MSc Engineering Leadership Management.

Whilst these programmes follow flexible regulations, they have specific regulations and the above information will not apply for them. If you are on either of these programmes please contact your MSc Coordinator for guidance.

Modules with Specific Pass Requirements

If you have failed a module and see an EX beside a component mark in your results	Some modules require you to pass the exam with 40%+ in order for the coursework element to count. This requirement would be specified in your Course Handbook if applicable to your modules. For these modules, if you did not achieve 40%+ in the exam you would have an EX moted alongside the coursework component and the final mark for the module will be the exam mark only.
If you see a QF beside your module result	Some modules have component-specific pass marks. For example, in some modules you must pass each component with 40%, as well as passing the module with 40% overall. If you did not meet the specific component criteria for a module you would receive a QF against your mark. How Will My Degree Be Calculated? (Undergraduate and Postgraduate)

BEng Degree Award Regulations

For the BEng Degree, your Year 2 average is given a weighting of 1 and your Year 3 average is given a weighting of 2 to give your overall weighted degree average.

Example
Year 2 Average = 62.14% Year 3 Average = 59.16% Weighted Degree Average = (62.14 x 1/3) + (59.16 x 2/3) = (20.67 + 39.33) = 60.15%

MEng Degree Award Regulations

For the MEng Degree, your Year 2 average is given a weighting of 1, your Year 3 average is given a weighting of 2 and your Year 4 average is given a weighting of 2 to give your overall weighted degree average.

Example
Year 2 Average = 62.36% Year 3 Average = 59.43% Year 4 Average = 63.10% Weighted Degree Average = (62.36 x 1/5) + (59.43 x 2/5) + (63.10 x 2/5) = 12.47 + 23.77 + 25.24 = 61.48%

Taught Postgraduate Regulations (Standard and Flexible)

The overall degree classification shall be calculated based on the mean average of module marks, that are weighted according to their credit value, across the whole programme.

For further information please refer to the University Postgraduate Assessment Regulations.

Preponderance and Exit-Velocity

If your weighted degree average comes to within 2% of the next degree classification boundary (called the ‘Window of Opportunity’), then the Preponderance and Exit-Velocity Principles are applied. This means you could attain a higher degree classification if you satisfy either of these principles.

Please read the following guidance on these principles.

For a BEng degree, this would mean getting 120 credits at a higher degree classification across Years 2 and 3. MEng Considerations

The MEng year enhances and extends the work that you cover in the BEng scheme, and fulfils all of the academic requirements mandatory for those wishing to pursue and achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng status).

Transferring to the MEng

	UK and Non-Student Route Visa Students	International and EC Students with Student Route Visas
Transferring to the MEng in Year 2	To be eligible to transfer, you will need a 55% Year 2 average.	To be eligible to transfer, you will need a 55% Year 2 average. You should request to transfer before April so that the necessary enquiries regarding CAS and visa applications can be made. Read the Visa Advice Team Integrated Masters Guidance for further information.
Transferring to the MEng in Year 3	If you achieved a 55% Year 2 Average you can apply to transfer to the MEng. If you did not achieve a 55% Year 2 Average you may request to transfer to the MEng after your Year 3 Semester 1 results are released. If you did not achieve a 55% Year 2 Average you may request to transfer to the MEng after your Year 3 Semester 1 results are released. Results are considered on a case-by-case basis and academic approval is required.

Student Route visa students already in Year 3 cannot transfer to the MEng at that stage.

However, you still have the option to applying to an MSc course.

In the 2025/26 academic year, the deadline for Year 3 students to transfer ON or OFF the MEng programme will be 23rd March 2026.

Remaining on the MEng

In Year 2: you are required to achieve a minimum 55% level average to remain on the MEng programme. If you do not achieve this then you will be transferred onto the BEng equivalent programme.
In Year 3: you are required to achieve a minimum 55% level average to remain on the MEng programme. If you do not achieve this then you will be transferred onto the BEng equivalent programme and be assessed under Final Year BEng regulations.
